Junior Infants

To our Amazing Junior Infants & Parents/Guardians,

We cannot believe we have reached the end of our school year. Congratulations

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the wonderful work you did with your children over the last few months. Thank you for staying connected with us throughout and for sending us so many lovely photos and videos of the children’s work. We really appreciate everything that was shared with us.

We hope you all have a fantastic Summer. Stay safe and have a well-earned break. We wish you all the best for Senior Infants.

Kind Regards,

Ms Hanlon, Ms Quinn and Mrs Cabello.

English
Jolly Phonics Sounds:
Practice the jolly phonics sounds as often as you can. Sing all the sounds, do all the actions and say all the sounds. We have attached the link below.
Sorting Sounds PowerPoints:
Ask the children to find the correct pictures that match the sound.
If they correctly identify them all, ask them can they think of any other words that start with the sound
Letter formation:
Here are all the letters we had successfully finished at school.  (c, a, o, d, g, q, e, s, f, r, b, n, h, m, k) Ask the children to practice these letters as often as they can. Please note, the red arrows show where the children start the letter formation. They don’t start at the bottom of the letter.

The children could practice tracing these letters on the screen, they could write them with their pencils, crayons, markers, they could make them with playdough, or they could write the letters on a baking tray with sugar or flour.
Correct pencil Grip:
Please ensure if your child is colouring, writing, drawing, painting etc. remind your child to hold their pencil correctly

Nursery Rhymes:
Sing along to these as often as you like.
Reading:
Children love having a story read to them by their parents/ Guardian. Try to read one book a day with your child. Bedtime is a lovely time to do this. Some tips/ideas:
  • Chat about the beginning, middle and end of the story with your child. Draw a picture of the beginning, middle and end of the story
  • Ask your child what they think is going to happen next in the story (“I predict”/ “I think that…”. Draw a picture of your prediction
  • Ask your child to make a connection with the story (ask them if they have seen anything in the story before e.g. a pig from The Pig in the Pond, a duck from Farmer Duck, if they have ever been to a farm before etc
  • Ask your child to tell you what their favourite part of the story is. Draw a picture of your favourite part of the story.
  • The children could also listen to some of these stories on youtube
  • The Enormous Turnip:The Enormous Turnip
  • Jack and the Beanstalk: Jack and the Beanstalk
  • The Ugly Duckling: The Ugly Duckling
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar: The Very Hungry Caterpillar – skip to 23 seconds

Maths

Subitising PowerPoint: Show the children the image of the counters. Give them 5 seconds then turn it away from them. Ask them to tell you how many counters they saw. Check the answer together.Repeat for each slide on the PowerPoint.
Practice writing your numbers 1-5:
Just like the children did with their letters they could practice writing their numbers using markers, crayons, pencils, paints? Can you make your numbers using playdough? Can you write your numbers on the ground outside using chalk?
**Remember your number formation rhymes**
1.    Straight line down and then I’m done that’s the way I make a 1.
2.    Half a heart will never do, slide to the right to make a 2.
3.    Around a tree, around a tree that’s the way we make a 3.
4.    Down and across, then down some more that’s the way we make a 4.
5.    Down and around and then we stop, we finish 5 with a hat on top.
